WELL OPTIONS

Window Well Types for Hamilton Basements

Three primary materials cover almost every window well installation. Which one's right for you depends on well depth, budget, load requirements above it, and aesthetic preference - we recommend the right fit for your project during the free site assessment.

Most Popular
Galvanized Corrugated Steel
Pre-formed corrugated steel wells in standard 3' to 5' diameters and depths, hot-dip galvanized for corrosion resistance. Lightweight, quick to install, and the most cost-effective option for a standard basement window - available in semicircular and rectangular profiles.
Lightweight
Polyethylene (PE) Wells
High-density polyethylene is lighter than steel and completely corrosion-proof, with a wider range of sizes including very large wells for deep egress windows. It's easier to handle on tricky access sites, UV-stabilized for a long service life, and never rusts where it meets the soil.
Permanent
Precast or Poured Concrete
Precast or site-poured concrete for large or custom openings, vehicle-rated applications, or wherever a permanent structural solution is called for. Custom sizing fits any opening dimension - it's the highest cost and most labour-intensive option, but it lasts the longest and carries the most strength.

DRAINAGE SYSTEM

Proper Window Well Drainage for Hamilton Basements

Water problems in a window well almost always trace back to inadequate drainage at the time of installation. Every well we install comes with a complete drainage system designed for local freeze-thaw conditions and a high spring water table.

Top
Polycarbonate Cover (Optional)
A bubble or flat polycarbonate cover sheds rain and snow while still letting light through, and it has to be removable from inside without tools to stay egress-compliant. It also cuts debris buildup by roughly 90%.
Grade
Window Well Rim Above Grade
The top of the well sits 50 to 100mm above finished exterior grade, which keeps surface runoff from entering it in the first place, and gets caulked and sealed against the foundation wall to stop water infiltration behind it.
Mid
Window Well Body
Whichever material is used, the well body gets secured to the foundation wall with anchor bolts, preventing movement during soil heave through the region's freeze-thaw cycles.
Base
Perforated Drain Pipe
A 4-inch perforated drain pipe sits at the base of the well, wrapped in filter fabric to keep clay from migrating in, and connects either to the weeping tile system or directly to a sump pit.
Bottom
Drainage Gravel Bed
At least 300mm of washed clear crushed stone sits at the base, letting water move quickly away from the window frame instead of pooling - this is the OBC minimum for egress window wells.
